DTMF (touch-tone)

DTMF, or dual-tone multi-frequency signaling, is the set of tones a phone sends when a key is pressed, which automated phone systems use to read the caller's input.

When a payer's menu asks for a provider number or member ID on the keypad, it is listening for DTMF tones. An AI calling agent sends those tones to enter the identifiers.
